Johnson throws straight heat, mixing a fastball (83-91) with a spitter (63-71) and does so with incredible effectiveness. Johnson may be called to the majors this year where he would anchor the 42's rotation and contend for ROtY.

The third pick in the country in 2005 out of Kishwaukee CC, Wright had a major stepback in his development when he blew out his arm after allowing a double on his first pitch of the 2007 season. Wright's eventual arrival in the majors was probably delayed a year by the surgery and 42's management hopes Wright can still live up to his immense potential. Wright has done a great job battling back while taking a back seat to phenom Jose Johnson. Their friendly rivalry will benefit both players in the future.

The bargain of the '08 IFA season and possibly of every season, Arrojo was had for 600K and promptly became a DITR, bringing his stam/dur. combo projections to something useful. Arrojo should be able to lock down 40 innings a season come 2012 with his average control, excellent splits, 2 great pitches and the ability to keep the ball down. His ranking is hard to figure since he can only pitch so many innings, but those innings are so valuable which is why we placed him here.

Despite being the 2nd round pick, Colo. St. alum Cortez ranks ahead of Mulholland due to quality of work, not quantity. Cortez is similar to Arrojo in that both will be used for about 40-50 innings a season. With pinpoint control Cortez will be murder on righties a few seasons down the line.
Best Comparison: HernĂ¡n Cortez, the Spanish conqueror of the Aztec Empire, also known as Cortez the Killer.

A sandwich pick in 2008, Cox was compensation for the signing of Gene Sheldon, who himself was a waiver wire pickup in season 5. Oleg has an outstanding curveball but relies on it too heavily which may lead to problems once he reaches the majors. Cox should be good for about 150 innings a year and will wear various hats for the 42's pitching staff. There are those in the organization who believe the 2009 AA Cy Young should have gone to Cox instead of Justin Seay, then again a little healthy rivalry never hurt anyone, ask Jose Johnson and Lawrence Wright.

DC management hopes Mulholland will turn into a poor man's Mendy Griffin, chewing up 150 innings a year out of the pen and snaking about 10 wins a season. DC will need guys like Griffin and Mulholland on the staff in a few years because with Juan Arrojo and Ricardo Cortez pitching about 50 innings a piece, someone will need to pick up the slack in the pen.

The Ohio native Pall does not have the stamina pitch more than 90 innings a year and will likely settle into a setup role for the 42's sometime in 2010. Pall has an above average fastball (68-73) that he mixes with an outstanding curveball (79-86). Pall is very similar to rule 5 sensation Hades Gibson and Washington brass expects similar production this year.

Seay was a 2nd round pick with first round talent who pitched like a 10th rounder in his first 3 seasons of pro ball. Fortunately everything came together for Seay in 2009, culminating in the AA NL Cy Young award. Seay starts 2010 in AAA and then hopes to be in the show in 2011.

Plucked from the Mexican leagues at age 20, Espada throws an excellent fastball (85-91) and a very good split fingered fastball (76-80) with average control. Espada will anchor the back of the 42's rotation starting in 2010 and for years beyond.
