8 players, all potential major leaguers, have been shipped out by GM schuyler101 during these Winter Meetings. The upside is that our GM managed to pull 4 future and present MLers, all pitchers, all of them relief pitchers.
Chance Edmonds was swapped one for one with Jeff Stankiewicz. There was simply no room for Edmonds in Washington and he will goto New Orleans and man the hot corner for rds_lsu this season, we wish him the best of luck. Stankiewicz projects to be a solid setup man for about 50 innings a season.
Washington and Cleveland pulled off a classic challenge trade a few days ago. Roy Pall goes from DC to Cleveland and Willie Azocar will come to DC. Nerio Blake was a throwin and does not project to make the majors. Pall and Azocar are incredibly similar in makeup and the only real difference is which hand they throw with. Time will tell who came out on top here, both players may make their ML debuts this season.
With depth in the system the 42's looked to make 3 for 1 deals in order to parlay quantity for quality. They made 2 such deals already.
Gil Duckworth is one such catch. Duckworth will pitch in long relief for DC this season and management is very high on him and his ability to eat quality innings. Washington had to give LA Matty Alomar, George Powell, and Ryan Gray. Alomar will contribute to a ML staff very soon, Powell will also be soon pitching in relief in the majors and Gray may start at 2B for LA in the near future.
Wilfredo Lugo is the 2nd big catch for the 42's this offseason. He comes from the new Colorado franchise and is grateful he will never have to pitch for the home team in Coors. In return the Humidors get Carlton Grimes, Rafael Castro, and Josh Witt. Grimes will presumably start in CF for Colorado with Castro possibly to his left in right field. Both should put up decent numbers in Colorado. Witt however has the unenviable task of pitching in Coors but should fair well as he does a very good job keeping the ball down, his hallmark in DC.
Coach signings were a general success. Interestingly the 42's brought back 2 former players as RL coaches. Adrian Parker will come back to be the hitting coach and Thomas Burroughs will be the pitching coach. How Burroughs won 16 major league games is beyond me.
The 42's also signed 13 players to minor league contract in order to bolster the farm system.
Washington has the 17th, 26th and 42nd picks in this seasons Rule 4 amateur draft and is looking forward to adding more depth to the system.
