AP - Washington landed Nicaraguan shortstop Rico Cedeno yesterday. Other known bidders for Cedeno are known to have been the New Orleans Pelicans, Los Angeles Angelenos, Arizona Tuques, and the Colorado Humidors, based on trade and world chat. The final bid was minor league deal with a bonus of 20.3m. 42's owner schuyler101 is surprised his bid wasn't topped by supreme tanker pieo and his war chest. In hindsight pieo may not have seen Cedeno, may be waiting for a truly elite int'l in an all or bust strategy that goes right along with a tanking strategy to get the top pick in every draft, or he just may not be that great an evaluator of talent because Cedeno will be an elite defensive shortstop with pop, a rare commodity in any world.
Cedeno reports immediately to Washington's HiA affiliate where he will step right in at shortstop. As a hitter Cedeno may be ready in 2 years but it could take 3 or 4 to develop his glove. This is the 3rd straight season DC has gone for a SS in IFA. Cedeno follows the Dominicans Jose Cabrera in 2008 and Guillermo Estrada in 2009. Cedeno's presence may push Estrada from his projected position of CF to 2B and Cabrera from SS to CF.
Cedeno inevitably chose DC because not only the money but also the stellar school system. Rico feels DC is a great place to raise his 5 children.
