On the Farm: Top 10 Position Prospects

DC does not have much to root for at the major league level, but has a compelling minor league system. And so I give you the rookie report for the 42's.

Only position players with less than 130 plate appearances at the ML level qualify

The third percentage listed is not OPS. It is OBPI. OBPI stands for On base percentage plus isolated power. I view OPS as a step in the right direction for player evaluation but still inadequate. I came up with OBPI to use in it's place, it is essentially a way of combining slugging percentage and on base percentage. A simple way to come up with OBPI is to subtract batting average from slugging percentage and then add that number to OBP.

1. Yamid Encarnacion
Primary Position: 1B
B/T: L/L
Age: 22 Ht./Wt.: 6'0" 195
Acquired: 2003 Draft
Draft: Round 1, Pick 9
Bonus: 8.1 m

DC's number one position prospect Yamid Encarnacion is also it's most major league ready. Encarnacion will slide comfortably into 1B for the 42's next year and produce monster numbers right off the bat. Yamid is the only player on this list who has not been acquired since schuyler101 took over as GM early in 2004. 101 does take a some credit for his presence in the DC system after what transpired on his first day as GM. Within hours of taking the helm a certain GM offered the 20 million dollar man Tori Redman straight up for Encarnacion. A very long trade chat was also written to the 42's GM explaining why it would be a good idea to trade away the crown jewel of his system. Luckily for the DC faithful they did not have a GM who was either gullible, brain dead or both and the future MVP candidate remained in the system rather than going to Durham. I think we can all be thankful for that.

Best Comparison: Todd Helton
2007 stats: AAA - .400, .477, .906, 154 R, 57 HR, 156 RBI
Awards:
2005 (AA) - NL All Star, Silver Slugger 1B
2006 (AAA) - NL MVP, All Star, Silver Slugger 1B, Newcomer of the Year
2007 (AAA) - NL MVP, All Star, Silver Slugger 1B
ETA: 2008

2. Haywood Twitchell
Primary Position: 2B
B/T: L/R
Age: 20 Ht./Wt.: 6'0" 173
Acquired: 2007 Draft
Draft: Round 1 - Pick 2
Bonus: 3.7 m

Going with offense instead of pitching with this year's second overall pick DC hopes Twitchell can become an above average defensive ML second baseman. If he can he will be one of the greats, a perennial All Star, MVP candidate, and eventual hall of famer. Worst case scenario is he has to be moved to left field where he won't be quite as valuable but a star nonetheless. Twitchell is a big proponent of OBP and OPS, but other than that the comparisons to Joe Morgan are warranted.

Best Comparison: Joe Morgan
Strengths: Hitting for Power, Speed
Weaknesses: Throwing Arm
2007 stats: (HiA) .362, .469, .833, 82 R, 15 HR, 68 RBI, 21 SB
Awards: None

ETA: 2010

3. Julio Segui
Primary Position: 3B
B/T: S/R
Age: 23 Ht./Wt.: 5'10 194
Acquired: 2006 IFA
Draft: N/A
Bonus: 20.1 m

DC likes to go all in for it's internationals, and has established a Cuban pipeline. Segui is no exception. Segui projects as a middle of the order hitter and a perennial gold glove winner at third base.

Best Comparison: Terry Pendleton
Strengths: Hitting, Glove, Makeup, Durability
Weaknesses: Temper
2007 stats: AAA - .328, .390, .643, 101 R, 27 HR, 91 RBI
Awards:
2006 (AA): Gold Glove 2B
2007 (AAA): NL All Star, Gold Glove 3B
ETA: 2009

4. Tony Castillo
Primary Position: LF
B/T: R/R
Age: 21 Ht./Wt.: 6'1 224
Acquired: 2007 IFA
Draft: N/A
Bonus: 26.0 m

26 million dollars for the 4th best position prospect speaks to the depth of the 42's system. The Cuban refugee was worth every penny and won the AA NL MVP in his first year of pro ball, despite missing about 30 games to injury. Expect to see Castillo continue to grow and fill out, finally settling in at the top of DC's batting order within a few seasons and becoming a perennial MVP candidate.

Best Comparison: Moises Alou
Strengths: Hitting, Baserunning
Weaknesses: Fielding, Speed
2007 stats: AA - .407, .489, .782, 115 R, 27 HR, 134 RBI
Awards:
2007: AA - NL MVP, Silver Slugger LF
ETA: 2009

5. Mateo Medrano
Primary Position: C
B/T: R/R
Age: 22 Ht./Wt.: 5'8" 215
Acquired: 2004 IFA
Draft: N/A
Bonus: 4.9 m

Medrano is slugging catcher who has averaged a HR about every 10 ab's in the minors thus far. Another cuban refugee, Mateo calls an average game but that is not what will make him a star. The time is soon for the 2004 IFA bargain.

Best Comparison: Javy Lopez
Strengths: Power
Weaknesses: Baserunning, Speed, Makeup
2007 stats: AAA - .313, .416, .829, 85 R, 43 HR, 105 RBI
Awards:
2007: AAA - NL All Star
ETA: 2008

6. Jose Montanez
Primary Position: CF
B/T: R/R
Age: 23 Ht./Wt.: 6'1 182
Acquired: 2004 Trade (Charleston)
Draft: 2002 Round 1, Pick 16
Bonus: 2.8 m

Montanez was acquired in a blockbuster set of deals that also netted Brady Simpson and sent Rickey Seaver, Calvin Bruske and Matty Campos to Charleston. As far as ML results go the Chew are ahead but DC is confident Montanez will balance those scales very soon.

Best Comparison: Rocco Baldelli/Dwight Evans
Strengths: 5 tool player
Weaknesses: None
2007 stats: AAA - .347, .423, .662, 105 R, 20 HR, 87 RBI, 14 SB
Awards:
2003: HiA - AL All Star
2005: AA - NL All Star
2006: AAA - NL All Star, Futures Game MVP
2007: AAA - NL All Star, All Star Game MVP, Silver Slugger CF
ETA: 2008/2009

7. Abraham Frascatore
Primary Position:
B/T: L/R
Age: 24 Ht./Wt.: 6'1" 178
Acquired: 2005 Trade (Honolulu)
Draft: 2002 Round 2, Pick 61
Bonus: 550K

The pride of Fort Gay, West Virginia, Abraham was acquired specifically to become the 42's shortstop of the future. Next season Frascatore will become the SS of the present, platooning against righties and acting as a defensive replacement when lefties start against the 42's.

Best Comparison: Ozzie Guillen
Strengths: Glove, Contact, vs. righties
Weaknesses: Makeup, Power, Batting Eye, anemic vs. lefties
2007 stats: AAA - .347, .401, .490, 77 R, 3 HR, 53 RBI, 11 SB
Awards:
2006: AAA - NL All Star, Gold Glove SS
2007: AAA - NL All Star
ETA: 2008

8. Carlton Grimes
Primary Position: CF
B/T: L/L
Age: 22 Ht./Wt.: 6'0" 188
Acquired: 2006 Draft
Draft: Round 1, Pick 38
Bonus: 800K

Despite Jose Montanez slotted to take over CF for the 42's next season the team chose Grimes with it's supplemental pick in 2006 to fill the need for a pure CF. Incidentally the 42's received the supplemental pick because Arizona and roperash decided to sign the mustachioed man himself, Matthew Banks, to a 3 year, 8.1m contract. Banks is now toiling in AAA. Thanks roperash!

Best Comparison: Andy Van Slyke
Strengths: Glove, Eye
Weaknesses: Makeup
2007 stats: AA - .293, .354, .562, 73 R, 17 HR, 84 RBI
Awards: None

ETA: 2010

9. Hideo Martin
Primary Position: 3B
B/T: R/R
Age: 20 Ht./Wt.: 5'4 170
Acquired: 2005 IFA
Draft: N/A
Bonus: 6.3 m

The 42's got a bargain late in the 2005 IFA market in Hideo Martin. It is possible the import from Osaka, Japan was not scouted well enough or teams may have been scared off by the fact that Hideo often has problems riding the rides at fairs. He also carries 170 pounds on his short frame, which could bode problems down the line. Regardless Martin projects to 5'7" which would make him only very short, as opposed to freakishly short. If there is a shorter player in HBD for HDers someone please bring him to my attention.

Best Comparison: 5'4? 170? I don't know, Freddy Patek? Eddie Gaedel? Short Round?
Strengths: All around solid player
Weaknesses: Midget Genes, Temper (Napoleon Complex)
2007 stats: AA - .347, .435, .647, 102 R, 13 HR, 75 RBI, 16 SB
Awards: None

ETA: 2010

10. Chance Edmonds
Primary Position: 3B
Age: 25 Ht./Wt.: 5'10 182
Acquired: 2005 trade straight up for Jim Winchester (Portland)
Draft: 2004 Round 2, Pick 60
Bonus: 550K

Acquired in exchange for staff ace Jim Winchester in season 5 hopes are high for Edmonds. The Florida State alum is the third 3B on the 42's top 10 list and is also stuck behind ML 3B Bernard Hammond. It is likely a position switch is in his future, most likely to RF, where he could become a gold glove, Jesse Barfield-type player. Down the line Edmonds could be a significant contributer on a playoff team.

Best Comparison: Gary Gaetti
Strengths: Makeup, Arm strength, hammers lefties
Weaknesses: Contact
2007 stats: .335, .393, .667, 63 R, 18 HR, 82 RBI
Awards:
2006: AAA - NL All Star Game MVP, Silver Slugger 3B
ETA: 2009
